The setup wizard

Six steps that turn an empty school into a working one. 15 minutes if you use the presets, and you can stop halfway.

The first time a school admin signs in, the system opens the wizard instead of the dashboard. That is deliberate: with no academic session and no classes, there is nothing a dashboard could usefully show.

Before you start — nothing. Every step can be changed afterwards, and two of the six can be skipped entirely.

What the six steps do

StepWhat it createsSkippable
1 — Academic sessionThe year you are working inNo
2 — School profileLogo, address, principal, currencyYes
3 — Classes & sectionsThe classes you teach, and their sectionsNo
4 — SubjectsThe subjects you teachYes
5 — Grading scale & fee headsHow marks become grades, and what you charge forYes
6 — FinishNothing — it just confirms

Two of them are genuinely required. You cannot finish the wizard without an academic session and at least one class, because nothing else in the system can exist without them.

Step 1 — Create your academic session

The session is the school year. Attendance, exams, fees and promotions all hang off it.

FieldWhat to enterExample
Session nameWhatever your school calls this year2026-27

Then choose Save & Continue. You should now see the profile step.

Use the name your staff already say out loud — 2026-27, 2026-2027, AY 2026/27. It appears on report cards and in every year dropdown in the system.

Dates come later, and that is fine

The wizard asks only for a name. Start and end dates, and the rest of what a session can carry, are set on the academic session page whenever you want them.

Step 2 — School profile

FieldWhat to enter
School logoA square-ish PNG or JPG, under 2 MB
AddressStreet, city, state
PhoneOffice contact number
Principal's nameAs it should appear on certificates
CurrencyThe symbol and the three-letter code — and INR

The logo is worth doing now

It appears on fee receipts, ID cards, certificates, report cards and the parent app. Adding it later means reprinting anything issued in the meantime.

Skip this step moves on without saving. Nothing breaks — the school just shows no logo until you add one.

Step 3 — Add your classes & sections

This is the step people expect to take an hour. It takes about a minute.

  1. Choose a preset — a whole group of classes at once, such as CBSE Primary (1–5) or Full K-12. You should now see those classes listed below
  2. Add anything the preset missed with Add a single class
  3. Set each class's sections in the box beside it, comma-separated — A, B, C creates three sections. Every class starts with one section, A
  4. Save & Continue

The presets are yours to edit

A preset is a starting point, not a commitment. Remove the classes you do not teach and add the ones you do — nothing about them is fixed.

Sections are not optional in practice

A class with no section cannot hold students. The wizard gives every class a section A for exactly this reason. If your school genuinely has no sections, leave the A in place and ignore it — do not empty the box.

Classes you already have are never duplicated. Running this step twice is safe.

Step 4 — Add your subjects

Same shape as classes: pick a preset, add your own, save. Subjects are a flat list at this point — which class studies which subject is decided later, under Sidebar → Academics → Assign Subjects.

You need subjects before you can build a timetable or enter marks. If you are not doing either this week, skip it.

Step 5 — Grading scale & fee heads

Two things in one step, both preset-driven.

Grading scale — how a mark becomes a grade. Pick a preset such as CBSE (A1–E2), Simple Letter (A–F) or Pass / Fail, and adjust the bands if your school's cut-offs differ.

Fee heads — what you charge for: Tuition Fee, Admission Fee, Transport Fee, and so on. Pick the preset groups that apply and add anything specific to your school with Add a fee head.

Skipping this has a delayed cost

Without a grading scale, report cards show marks but no grades. Without fee heads, you cannot raise a single invoice. Neither fails loudly — you simply find the option missing on the day you need it.

Step 6 — Finish

The last screen summarises what was created. Choose Finish setup & open dashboard.

If the two required items are not done, the system refuses and tells you exactly what is missing — for example, "Your school still needs: Classes & sections." Go back, finish it, and try again.

Stopping halfway

Skip for now — I'll set up later, at the top of the wizard, takes you to the dashboard.

This does not mark your school as set up. The dashboard keeps a setup checklist showing what is still outstanding, and you can return to the wizard at any time by opening /school/onboarding.

Coming back resumes at the first step you have not finished — nothing is repeated and nothing is lost.

The checklist that follows you

The dashboard tracks eight things, not the six in the wizard. The extra two are the work the wizard cannot do for you:

ItemRequiredWhy it matters
Academic sessionYesEverything hangs off the current session
School profile & logoNoYour logo appears on receipts, ID cards and the parent app
Classes & sectionsYesYou cannot admit a student without a class to admit them into
SubjectsNoNeeded before a timetable or marks entry
Grading scaleNoMarks cannot become grades on a report card without it
Fee headsNoRequired before you can collect anything
StudentsNoAdmit them one at a time, or import a spreadsheet
StaffNoTeachers need accounts before they can take attendance or enter marks

Work down it in that order. It is the order the system itself uses.
