Notifications & message wording

Which events send messages, on which channel, and exactly what they say.

This is where "the school is getting too many messages" and "parents never hear anything" both get solved.

What this screen controls

Every automatic message the system sends is tied to an event — a fee is paid, a student is marked absent, results are published. For each event you control:

1. Whether it is active at all
2. What it says on email, SMS, WhatsApp and push — separately

Each can be Activated or Deactivated on its own.

Four channels, four messages

Open an event and you get a tab per channel: Email, SMS, WhatsApp, Push.

Each has its own Active switch and its own wording, because the same message should not read identically everywhere — an SMS costs money per character, a push notification is one line, an email can be a paragraph.

Leaving a message blank disables that channel

Blank wording means the platform default for that channel is switched off. That is the clean way to say "notify by push and email, but never by SMS" for a given event.

Email wording is yours alone

The email tab exists only here — schools cannot change email wording. Emails also render inside the standard branded layout, so you are writing the message body, not the design.

Placeholders

Messages use placeholders that get replaced when sending — the student's name, the amount, the date. Type them exactly as shown in the screen's examples; a misspelled placeholder prints literally to the parent.

India: changing SMS or WhatsApp wording can stop delivery

If your SMS or WhatsApp messages go through DLT-registered templates, the text must match what the operator approved, character for character.

Edit the wording here and messages that previously delivered will be rejected by the network — often reported back as "sent". Update the approved template first, then change it here. See SMS.

Getting the volume right

The most common complaint is not too few messages — it is too many.

Symptom	Fix
Parents complain of constant messages	Deactivate low-value events, or leave SMS blank and keep push only
SMS costs are higher than expected	Move high-frequency events (absence, homework) to push and email only
Schools say parents never hear anything	Check the event is active, the channel has wording, and the school's own switches are on

Push is free, SMS is not

Anything going to a parent who has the app should prefer push. Reserve SMS for what genuinely matters — fees and absence — and for parents without the app.

A message arrives only when all of these agree:

So "no messages are arriving" is usually one of three things, not a fault.

Common problems

What you see	Cause
Nothing sends at all, any event	The cron job — everything is queued
One event never sends	It is deactivated, or that channel has blank wording
One school gets nothing	That school's own notification switches, or an empty wallet
Placeholder text appears literally	Misspelled placeholder — check the preview
SMS delivered before, rejected now	Wording no longer matches the approved template
